Today is the first day of no sales tax for any purchases related to school usage (details below). Georgia has been offering these tax holidays for years now and they seem to work as most businesses report an increase in sales over these weekends.
House Bill 948 provides for a sales tax exemption from both state and local sales taxes for certain items purchased July 31 – August 3, 2008. The Bill also provides an exemption for specific energy and water efficient products purchased October 2 –5, 2008. Information related to that holiday will be available at later date.
During the sales tax holiday period, a sales tax exemption applies to purchases of tangible personal property in the following categories:
- Articles of Clothing. The exemption applies to articles of clothing and footwear with a sales price of $100 or less per item. Clothing accessories such as handbags, umbrellas, cuff links, handkerchiefs, jewelry, key cases, wallets, watches and watch bands, and ponytail holders and/or similar hair products are not exempt. See lists of exempt items.
- Personal Computers. A single purchase of $1,500 or less of personal computers and/or related accessories is exempt. If the single purchase exceeds $1,500, the entire transaction is taxable. See list of exempt items.
- General School Supplies. The exemption applies to the purchase of general school supplies with a sales price of $20 or less per item. See list of exempt items.
The exemptions are intended for an individual’s personal use. The exemptions exclude items rented, leased, purchased by businesses, or purchased for resale. The exemptions do not apply to items sold at theme parks, entertainment complexes, hotels, restaurants, and airports.

Colbert refers to our local Canton as “crappy Canton”!

Canton, GA got some unexpected public promotion recently when Stephen Colbert referred to Canton as crappy. Here is Colbert’s quote:
“Canton. And not the crappy Canton in Georgia. I’m talking about Canton, Ohio!”
Many local papers have covered the story and seem to focus on Bill Grant’s attempt to have Stephen Colbert visit Canton, GA as if they are lighthearted and fun comments. Mr. Grant is president of the Historic Canton Homeowners Association and this is his quote the ColbertNation forum:
“Dear Mr. Colbert,
We, the good citizens of Canton, Georgia, do NOT appreciate your disparaging reference to our fine, God-fearing town as the “crappy” Canton! After all, to take second fiddle to Canton, Ohio? What were you thinking? I know you are a native South Carolinian, which by all means, casts a superior light of unbearable being on your shallow soul; however, have you ever actually been to Canton (aka - the crappy one)? As president of the Historic Canton Homeowners Association, I officially invite you to our next “Mint Juelp Party on the Porch” gathering, and I double dog DARE you to actually show up with your stage make-up and camera crew in tow! Show us what you are made of, or are you actually afraid that you may hurt your wrist or scar your pretty on-camera face in the process? Make no mistake, I have been a huge fan, up until tonight, but crappy Canton boy now says, “die, you gravy-sucking pig!” Have your people contact my people, and we will go from there. Now, I think I shall retire to my crappy bed in crappy Canton, Georgia…I look forward to your crappy response.
Sincerely,
Bill Grant
Canton (the crappy one), Georgia”
I use to live Canton, still have family living in Canton, and I find Mr. Grant’s quote way more offensive than Colbert’s. I can’t think of any good reason to “double dog dare” anybody to do anything, especially to join someone for a mint julep party on the parch. I look forward to the days when Canton has better spokespersons to truly share the quality of life many enjoy in Canton, GA.
Canton’s Mayor, Gene Hobgood had this to say in response: “Well, number one, he’s a comedian,” “And number two, it’s clear to me that he has never been to Canton, Georgia.”
Mr. Hobgood should also have shared information about the low cost of living, rolling hills, beautiful valleys, Etowah River, many parks and quality food and dining that many residents enjoy in Canton, GA.

Avoid Using Form Commercial Contracts
Posted: July 21st, 2008
Category: commercial news
Pre printed form commercial sales agreements contain pitfalls for buyers unaware that the form is silent on many provisions that are critical to specific types of corporate and real estate transactions. I recently reviewed a form commercial sales agreement that addressed the sale of a business along with the commercial real estate. The form, however, was silent on critical issues such as non competes from the seller and its principal owner. The form also did not address escrowing a portion of the purchase price for use in the event the seller breached the contract. When confronted with pre-printed form agreements, the buyer should not automatically assume this form is more efficient and costs less. It is typically more difficult and time consuming for an attorney to review a form prepared by someone else because he or she must figure out what has been left out or not addressed in the draft contract. As a result, the buyer should always insist whenever possible on drafting the sales documents and not rely on the use of the pre printed form or other seller generated form agreement.
