Small Business is what makes Small Towns…GREAT

Small Town Businesses

Small Businesses and the value they add to the US Economy is often overlooked and under-appreciated.  Entrepreneurship is an American Dream, to start your own business and make a difference in your life as well the lives of others.  It’s too bad that the government regulations make it difficult to start a company.

Time Magazine Names You Person of the Year

Mark Cuban, of whom I’m a big fan, recently had an idea to jump start the economy

If you want to see an immediate re invigoration of the economy, open the door back up for individual entrepreneurs to enter the real world without fear and without an immediate financial burden that pre empts their ability to be successful.

If we really want to stimulate job creation in this country, take the same approach to small business with 25 or fewer employees that we take to Internet taxes. Outlaw them.

No taxes of any kind on small businesses with 25 or fewer employees. No employer payroll tax. No state or local taxes. No taxes on earnings. Nada. The business owners will pay income taxes on their personal income they pay themselves, but not corporate earnings.

Mark goes on to make some really great points…

Not only would we see hundreds of thousands of new businesses started seemingly overnight, with millions of new hires, but from those new businesses would come new ideas that hopefully would give us our next “Internet”, an engine for economic growth that super cedes today’s ideas.

In today’s climate, its politically expedient to volunteer taxpayer money as a solution to all problems. That’s wrong. Instead, we should open the door to our country’s Intellectual capital and the entrepreneurial energy that separates us from the rest of the world. Make it easy for entrepreneurs to do what entrepreneurs do, and great things happen. Voters and politicians alike seem to have forgotten what has made this country an economic powerhouse.

Here at Maxsell Real Estate we believe in supporting local businesses first.  In fact, we believe so strongly that local businesses and their owners are what makes our local small towns great!  So, in order to help promote local businesses, we have created a way for each small business owner to advertise to our subscribers and weekly visitors by completing our BizMax questionnaire.  We will take these results and create a story featuring your company on our website for FREE.

Cherokee County Politics

Local campaigns are in full swing around Cherokee County as several key seats are available. I have always believed that if you are in real estate, then you are also in politics. Politicians have so much power to affect the value and property rights to your home and land. I have written many times why many current Cherokee commissioners goals of ’slow growth’ are a poor way to plan for the future.

I hope the citizens of Cherokee County will elect some forward thinking commissioners who will plan for smart growth and not try to manage growth or slow it down. It has been proven that land-use regulations can adversely affect the cost of living and can severely stifle growth. If you are not growing, then you are dying.

I also find it funny to watch local politicians double their pay with one vote. Too bad every Cherokee resident can’t double their pay to cover increased taxes with a single vote.

Here’s the official list of Cherokee political races:

Post 2 County Commission

Jim Hubbard, incumbent

Quentin Thomas

William Grizzle

Post 3 County Commission

Karen Mahurin, incumbent

Joel Calhoun

Tornado Damages Woodstock Real Estate

1000+ homes were damaged by a tornado and severe storm with hail and high winds on Tuesday night. Georgia Governor, Sonny Perdue, declared State of Emergency for Cherokee County. Governor Purdue had this to say, “I am always amazed at the extensive damage caused by these storms, but we are proud to see our communities pull together as neighbors help neighbors recover from this type of situation.”

Forecasters said it was at least the 32nd tornado to hit Georgia this year. The National Weather Service said winds reached 95 mph in southern Cherokee. According the AJC, most of the structural damage was caused by falling trees, officials said. “Homes aren’t blown away, but the damage is widespread,” Cherokee Sheriff Roger Garrison said.

Southern Oaks and Farmington subdivisions seems to be the hardest hit. The elementary school I attended, Johnston Elementary off East Cherokee Drive, was also damaged and served as command post for first responders.

It is really good to see neighbors helping neighbors during these tough times of clean-up and recovery. It just proves what a great community Woodstock really is.

Woodstock: Main Street Sessions at Dean’s Store

The Main Street Sessions is a monthly series in 2008 that will feature prominent local authors. Every month on the third Saturday at 1pm people will have the chance to hear presentations from the individuals that have helped shape the culture of the area in the unique setting of Historic Dean’s Store. This is the second year of the series.

The February 16th program is Heartworks Art Studio. Heartworks Art Studio is located in downtown Woodstock at 114 Towne Lake Parkway. Heartworks is a working studio, as well as offering art instruction classes and special workshops. Promoting local artists is a very important part of Heartworks’ mission. Heartworks holds open studio nights on the first Friday of each month, where they feature the works of a local artist, enjoy live music and refreshments. These events are free of charge and open to all. Deborah Tidwell is the founder of Heartworks Art Studio. She teaches oil painting classes, and paints commissioned portraits and fine art. Deborah was born in Memphis, Tennessee. She is the mother of three, Paul, Drew and Joy. Paul, her eldest, is currently serving our country in Iraq. Resident Artist, Amber Klippel, specializes in oil paintings, outdoor art and furniture as well as pyrography. A portion of the proceeds of her popular Goddess Series goes to various charitable organizations to benefit women. Amber was born in Atlanta Georgia, and is mother of one teenage son, Myke.
