1. Pure Taqueria in Downtown Woodstock

The rooftop terrace of Pure is a great place to grab one of their signature margaritas, watch the sun set over downtown Woodstock, and listen to some acoustical tunes. Sidenote: The balcony can get pretty lively (read: raucous) as the night wears on, so people watching is also a prime source of entertainment.  The rooftop hours are Tuesday and Wednesday 5-11, and  Thursday-Sunday, 11-11.  Visit their Facebook fan page or call 770-952-PURE for information on the upcoming bands.

2. The Woodstock Coffee House in Woodstock

You would expect that with coffee drinks and cafe fare named after the likes of Dylan, Marley, and the Rolling Stones, the Woodstock Coffee House would have a special reverence for music, and they don’t disappoint. Giving Mondays a new reason to be, the WCH hosts an open mic night that attracts stellar local talent from 7-10 p.m. They also host live music EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT from 8-10 p.m. Check out their Facebook Fan Page or call 770-928-2901 with any questions.

3. The Downtown Kitchen in Canton

Zack Kell’s Canton restaurant Downtown Kitchen is becoming known all over Cherokee County for more than their delicious steak dinners. The second floor of the restaurant, with its full bar and exposed brick walls, is the perfect venue to enjoy some live music in a historic setting. The bands range nicely in both style and age, so be sure to check their website calendar and Facebook fan page to see some of your favorites.

4. Land of a Thousand Hills in Roswell

A coffeehouse whose slogan is “Drink Coffee, Do Good,” Land of a Thousand Hills is as much “great cause” and “great coffee.” They have been featured on CNN for their efforts to help Rwandan genocide survivors by offering small farmers a just living wage for their Arabica beans, and they also extend micro-loans to Rwandan women entrepreneurs. The coffee they serve is roasted locally in Roswell and offers a freshness beyond compare. Live music is held here every Friday and Saturday night from 8-10 p.m. and ranges from jazz to acoustic covers and more.

5. The Right Wing Tavern in Downtown Woodstock

Located in the historic train depot in downtown Woodstock, the Right Wing Tavern is the local watering hole for thirsty (and hungry) townies. Owner Jamey Snyder is always posting daily Facebook specials, so make sure you check them out before you head over. With beer pong tournaments on the back deck and scheduled Dirty Hippy, Left-Wing Music Night, it’s a great place to hang out, no matter what your politics are looking like these days.

In this age when it’s become obvious that “word of mouth” is still king, but “word of mouth on Facebook, Twitter, and blogs” now reigns supreme, I’m grateful that my town is one that’s looking toward the future. From starting open dialogs with their fans on Facebook to “tweeting” about upcoming events and sales, downtown Woodstock is quickly becoming one of the most social media-savvy towns in the Atlanta-Metro area. In an effort to stay better connected with their customers, merchants have begun teaming up for “Digital Downtown” meetings held every Wednesday at the Right Wing Tavern to learn about how to successfully incorporate new media tools into their online presence. The group ranges in internet skill level from novice to expert, but brought together by the common goal of encouraging fans to shop and eat locally, they are reinforcing the reality that “real life” sales often spring from “virtual” conversations. Well done, Woodstock!

Brad Nix, co-owner of Maxsell Real Estate, is on hand at Digital Downtown meetings to share his knowledge of new media techniques with merchants.

First Cherokee State Bank (FCSB) owns the remaining lots and will be a critical partner as the new construction begins.  As the initial lender for the acquisition and development of Woodstock Downtown the bank has been involved with the project from the beginning and today maintains its dedication and vision for Woodstock Downtown.  FCSB will remain the Declarant for Woodstock Downtown and as such will approve all of the elevations and floor plans built by John Wieland Homes.   In the next few weeks owners within Woodstock Downtown will be invited to attend a meeting with John Wieland Homes’ representatives where they will be able to preview plans and elevations as well as the revised plat that is in the process of being approved by the City of Woodstock.  Wieland representatives will be available to answer questions and share their vision for the completion of Woodstock Downtown.

According to Heritage Property Management, John Wieland Homes is uniquely qualified to maintain the style and architectural integrity which exists in the community today.  Their homes will reflect the thoughtful planning that is the hallmark of every John Wieland neighborhood.

The sales trailer is expected to arrive on site in the next few days.  Marketing plans are being finalized.  Surveying is underway and an air of excitement is drifting into the community.  Could this be part of the solution to the water and sewer fee problems in Woodstock?  Either way, it’s a start towards progress for the City of Woodstock recovering from a tough couple of years.  Welcome JWH!

Spend the first Friday of every month in Olde Towne Woodstock and enjoy the many restaurants and stores that the area has to offer as the Downtown Merchants stay open late, 5pm-9pm This is the third year for the Friday Night Live series.

For each Friday Night Live theme participating Downtown Merchants will have activities going on at their stores and throughout the Downtown area related to the theme of the month. Friday Night Live also features great music as bands play throughout Downtown Woodstock in front of the stores which adds to the street festival feel of the event.

May 7th Siete de Mayo- Pop out that sombrero and enjoy the area’s only Siete de Mayo Party. It’s South of the Border in South Cherokee!

The Mariachi Band, Mariachi Los Arrieros, will be strolling around Downtown Woodstock during the event playing some great music. In additionother musicians playing during the event are, Six Strings South will be playing in front of Val’s Happy Shack, Steve Lusk will be playing in front of Roomscapes Gallery, and Jeffery Byrd will be playing in front of Seven Arrows.

The Downtown Merchants will have a sombrero contest!

All kinds/styles of hats can be entered in the contest, it doesn’t have to be a Mexican sombrero. You will need to go from store to store to register for the contest, each store will pick their fav and the winner will be drawn from that pool. The prize for this contest will be a $25 gift certificate to Pure Taqueria. So be sure to wear a great hat to the event!

Seven Arrows will have Mexican style refreshments and will be having a huge jewelry sale.

Pennybag Emporium will be celebrating Siete de Mayo with a mexican hat game for the kids with as always free prizes for anyone who participates. Our refreshments will have a hint of mexican taste but not too spicey!! We have three vendors setting up outside with homemade crafts including children’s clothes, jewelry and potpourris. Be sure to check out the photos from last month’s “80′s” costume contest and the winning customer!

Pure Taqueria will feature a drink special for the event and will have some special giveaways.

Vals Happy Shack will have fiesta snacks and beverages. Also everyone at the shack will be dress up in their best Siete de Mayo gear.

LKT Sports Art will have health food store “All About Health” set up in front of LKT Sports with a special a booth. Lots of other fun stuff planned at LKT Sports for the event.

Roomscapes Gallery & Heartwork Studios will be hosting an ‘Architectural Show’ by multiple local artists. Come join us for chips & salsa and other munchies, live music by Steve Lusk, and meet some of the local artists. The Elm Street Cultural Arts Village will also have an informational booth set up and representatives to answer questions on the site plan and vision for Woodstock.

Mom’s Table will be giving out samples of their Tamale Casserole with free lemonade at a table they will have set up in front of the Woodstock Visitors Center.

The Magnolia Thomas Restaurant will have a Daily Special of Blackened Tuna Soft Taco with a Chipotle Mango Salsa.

The Woodstock Visitors Center will have Game Night, where you can play your fav board or card game in the historic setting of Dean’s Store.

I recently needed my air conditioner repaired, it was a hot early spring here in North Atlanta.  I was referred to My Mechanic Joe from a friend of mine (isn’t word of mouth always the best place to find trusted referrals?).  I was hoping for a good mechanic to fix my A/C, what I got was some of the best customer service I have ever received from any business in any industry.

Joe not only solved my A/C problem (and fixed a few other key problems that I had been neglecting), but went a few extra steps for me as a client.  It’s always the ‘extra’ steps that make the difference.

- when I dropped off my car, I pulled out my cell phone to call for my wife to pick me up.  Joe stopped me and said he’d have someone shuttle me to the office.

- when I called to check on the status of my car, he sent someone to pick me up as well.

- when I went to pay, he instructed the office manager to lower the bill to be below the number he estimated when we first discussed the work to be done.

Joe proved that not only could he fix my car, but he was someone who would go the extra step for me and even beter… Joe proved he was I could trust.

We need more Joe’s in this world.

I’m glad that he’s a Woodstock business owner and encourage you all to support him with your business.

Why?

“Costs are high because the city buys water from the Cherokee and Cobb county systems, which together raised rates a total of three times since 2008. The raises ranged from 11 percent to 35 percent.

Woodstock is also paying off loans for expanding sewer lines and building a sewer treatment plant, and there are unexpected costs to replace high-tech water filters at the plant. The filters must be replaced more often, at $1,200 each, because the city cut out a treatment step when building the plant five years ago in an effort to save money. (The cost to replace or rebuild filters since 2006 has been $340,000.) They got bad advice from a former city manager, Henriques said.”

Is there a solution planned?

“City Manager Jeff Moon said the city is considering options, such as selling its treatment plant to the Cherokee or Cobb system and joining them. The day of the little, independent water and sewer system is over, especially with the pressures over water usage and availability filtering down from state and national levels, he said.

“The other option is a rate increase,” Moon said.”

What about more ‘other’ options?

I suggest Woodstock consider just giving it’s treatment plant away.  It’s obviously not a money-maker for the city (or they wouldn’t have to raise prices to keep it operating).  Granted, it would be nice to get some money for the plant and also have Cobb or Cherokee manage the system at a lower cost to the residents of Woodstock.  But let’s not get greedy in this time of need.

Or perhaps some new growth into the city will spread the costs to more people.  Did I just suggest the city to grow in a down time? Yes, in fact…

The Woodstock Concert Series begins its thirteenth year with a stellar lineup of musical acts, including Sister Hazel with opener Memory Dean on May 8th. The free concerts in the downtown City Park showcase both locally and nationally-recognized bands and include a healthy variety of classic rock, country, oldies, jazz and rhythm and blues.  Always a family friendly affair, games for the kids and local food vendors will be set up around the perimeter of the park.  Music lovers are encouraged to show up early for the 7:30 shows and bring their lawn chairs and blankets.

Here’s the scenario: There are short-sleeves, little umbrella drinks, and flip-flops in your very near future. So why spend your Saturdays trapped in a stuffy, enclosed mall when you can be free with the sun on your face, strolling through shop doors propped open to let in the spring breezes? If you haven’t had a look around downtown Woodstock lately, you’re in for a nice surprise. These Main Street proprietors have rolled out the welcome mat for Spring (and you) in a huge way.

1. Outspokin’ Bicycles

Beginning March 17, the staff of Outspokin’ Bicycles has ushered in weekly spring road rides every Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. and and a beginners’ riding group on Saturday mornings at 7 a.m. Both groups depart from the Hickory Flat Publix on the corner of Highway 140 and East Cherokee Drive. What’s great about riding with (and buying from) these guys is being able to witness the pure passion they have for what they’re doing. Their knowledge is not rooted in any text book, but from their real experience riding on the roads and trails of North Georgia.

2. Linden

Woodstock’s own purveyor of French and English antiques, Linden is also the go-to spot for garden parties and planting advice from horticulture enthusiast Laurie Prentice. Laurie specializes in planning outdoor parties for both young and young-at-heart in her landscaped courtyard outside of her downtown boutique.

3. Bella Boutique

Bella Boutique, located next to the downtown gazebo, is opening its doors for two weeks in April (March 31-April 3 and April 7-11), which leaves plenty of time to stop in to find that perfect beach bag or accessories for all those spring get-togethers.  Besides handbags, they also carry clothing, jewelry, scarves, and shoes — all guaranteed to keep you prettier than your mall-shopping neighbors.

4. Honey Butter

Honey Butter’s extensive spring line is a treasure trove of style. From new sun dresses to coordinating clutches, shoes, and jewelry, this Woodstock boutique has your spring wardrobe covered.  As always, they are offering the “buy-two-get-one-piece-free” on special on jewelry, and they also invite you to book after-hours “discount shopping parties” with your friends.

5. Val’s Happy Shack

Touted as Woodstock’s premiere place to find “hip trends for real people,”  Val’s Happy Shack has stocked its racks with styles ranging from hippie chic to classic style. A friendly and helpful staff always welcomes you here, and besides clothes, they also offer jeans fittings, jewelry by local artisans, original art work, and home shopping parties.

I can write about girly things to do in Cherokee County ad nauseum (and I probably will at some point.)  But what of our men? When they’re let loose from their weekly toils, what local manly pursuits await? I was curious about this very thing, so I asked my husband to skip out of work one day and be my  “man-date” guinea pig. All day long, we did only the things that he wanted, and they were all within a ten-minute drive from our house in Woodstock.

1. A Straight Razor Shave at E’s Barber Shop in Woodstock

Our first stop was E’s Barber Shop on Highway 92.  E’s is run by a father-and-son team, Jim and Engelbert, and they specialize in giving the old-fashioned straight razor shave that is, hands down, the closest shave you’ll ever get in your life.  For the rest of the day, I  spied my husband’s hands being drawn instinctively to his face and then his head shaking in disbelief.  ”This is amazing,” he kept repeating.  A thirty-minute luxury, the service includes steamed hot towels, a rich lather cream, a precision shave, an astringent, and a moisturizer.  They also offer a man’s haircut for only twelve dollars with the added benefit of big screen TV’s, free wi-fi, and sports talk.

2. A Cigar from Little River Cigar Company in Holly Springs

As you drive down Highway 5 towards Holly Springs and past the old train depot, there’s a cigar shop tucked behind the railroad tracks of which every man should take note.  Swinging open the door  of Little River Cigar Company transported me instantly back to my childhood home filled with the deep, heady aroma of my father’s den.  That distinctive scent of cigar tobacco, leather, and cedar gave me the strange satisfaction that I was being given leave to trespass for a while into a modern-day man cave with its walk-in humidor and hardwood floors with their own stories to tell. Dwayne, the owner, offers coffee (on the house) and a smoking lounge with leather club chairs and a big screen TV.  For the true connoisseur, a locker in the humidor can be rented to stow away your purchases for future visits.

3. A Game on the Big Screen at the Right Wing Tavern in Woodstock

The Right Wing Tavern has established itself as the ultimate watering hole for men (regardless of their politics) who want to grab a couple of brews with friends and catch a game on the big screens.  Located in Woodstock’s historic train depot on Main Street, the tavern’s co-owner Jamey Snyder  always has a drink and/or food special going on.  On a particularly nice day, you can go sit outside under the protection of the patio next to the tracks and, if you’re very lucky, catch sight of the glass-rattling train going by.  (Beer, football, food, and trains–it doesn’t get much more “manly” than that.)

4.  Hi Caliber Firearms in Holly Springs

Described as “your neighborhood gun store and indoor range in Cherokee County,” Hi Caliber in Holly Springs is astonishingly women-friendly.  (That’s a blog post for a later date, for sure.)  Club chairs and a stone fireplace greet you just inside the door, and an expansive gun and ammo selection line the walls all around.  For a weekday during mid-morning, business remained surprisingly brisk as men donned their goggles and ear protection and headed for the indoor gun range.   Besides providing all levels of training sessions for both men and women, the range maintains ten spacious lanes that rent by the day, not the hour. This guarantees the chance to relax and take your time without having to check the clock every five minutes.  For the true gun enthusiast, the store extends the rare offer to deliver any purchased gun safe within twenty miles.
