Marietta approves funding for historic districts

Tranquilla Marietta approves funding for historic districtsEstablished in 1834, Marietta is considered a historic city with hundreds of properties eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The city has five nationally registered historic districts and two nationally registered historic properties.

The city does not currently have locally designated districts other than the downtown Marietta historic district, which is under the authority of the Historic Board of Review.

The budget approval will give the newly created Historic Preservation Commission the ability to begin the first steps to locally designate districts and landmarks in the city.

Preserving Marietta’s historic character by maintaining properties and neighborhoods for future generations is a goal city council established as part of its most recent vision statement.
